How often do you encourage yourself or give yourself praise for doing a good job? How often do you praise yourself without moments later negating the very praise you just gave? For example: I really did a good job with that but if . . .
I’m thinking about this right now because I ‘m proud of myself. “YES”! I am doing a good job developing my dreams, loving me better and empire building. I don’t need another to validate or even acknowledge my progress and I am grateful for that. You wouldn’t know what that means for me unless you were privy to the facts of my life that my friends are. But suffice it to say, it hasn’t always been that way for me. Growth is sexy!
My productivity has kicked up a notch primarily because I watch and attempt to do what the no holds barred productivity soldiers do. My uncle Dee was one of those people who demonstrated a work ethic that is producible by all but requires a character and an acceptance of discomfort that in today’s culture seems lost amongst the majority of people.
My inner six year old wants, and even in most instances expects, that others appreciate my efforts and my intentions regardless of the actual results. How dare anyone not drop what they are doing to go hard in full support of my soft efforts? I tried so why isn’t that enough.
Expecting something for little or nothing in return is ridicules and runs rampant worldwide. SOFT! Expecting support and attention from others while giving excuses for lack of results is childish. Some people may see and even appreciate evidence of your or my personal growth; if they acknowledge it and offer praise for it then that’s nice too. However, when it comes to business or your career, results are all that count!
“Results are all that count” is the mantra around here! This mantra gets verbalized more and more frequently. So when I say I’m proud of myself and I’m doing a good job, I am referring to the personal work associated with generating output without complaint; the personal growth.
I’ve never been a punk, but I have had childish expectation and when, on occasion, the childishness attempts to creep back in and skew my perspective I tell myself this: “The world owes me nothing and God has planted within me the ability to create on the level of my believing.” I can have all I desire but only as a result of doing the required work. The world will give me nothing but I can have all I want through doing.
Do something and stop being soft, because results are all that count around here!
Just my thoughts.

As a kid I often heard this statement; “The early bird gets the worm.” Hummmmm, while I understand the point, I also notice that the implied underlying point is that there is only one worm to get. Flipping this underlying point and taking it one step further is the historically stated, “There aren’t enough opportunities.” I can’t find a job, or I can’t find a good mate or ( ), you fill in the blank. Here is a new cliché for new times; “He who goes hardest gets the most opportunities”.
Now, I just read an article on Diddy; like him, love him or hate him, he represents going hard for his business and his life. Sometimes people can miss the point when his current lifestyle is viewed. Yes, he has two assistants and other staff members helping him create results. He has producers, engineers and writers he works with to complete the creations he ultimately sells to the public.
However, in the same article a story was told of Diddy running 12 blocks to quickly pick up a demo tape from a studio and bring it back to the person he worked for as an intern. Not walking, not taking a cab or a car or a train, he ran! Not to be condescending, but to drive the point home, he was an intern and, in case you don’t know what that really means; he wasn’t getting paid!
He wasn’t running for a check, he was running for opportunity! He was running for the life he has now, today; before he had it. He was running to show he was willing to do more than the last person in his position who chose to walk or jog or ride. He was running to get to his current position. You know the old cliché, get in early and stay late, or, be the first one in and the last one to leave, etc. He was going hard to maximize the current thing and parlay it into a bigger next thing.
Never before in the history of man has the playing field been so level. With tenacious persistence anyone can get to anyone or do anything. That being said, while in some respects things may appear easier because there are more opportunities, the other side of that same point is; more people are gunning for those opportunities.
Today the only thing that will consistently set you apart from everyone else is the same as it has always been; you have to bring more to each opportunity than everyone else attempting to get it: skill, passion, drive and willingness to do more! Run, not walk! Go harder or go home!
I regularly remind myself of this fact and work to train myself so I can improve and perform better. There has never been, and never will be, a shortage of opportunity. But he who goes hardest will have the most!
Wisdom from the Grind: He who goes hardest gets the most opportunities! |
Wisdom from the grind brought this to my remembrance.
The Lion and the Gazelle:
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
The moral:
It doesn’t matter if you are a lion or a gazelle; when the sun comes up, you better be running. |
