 Just My Thoughts

Roger E LearWhere would I be without you?

Hummmmm. Sometimes I have days like today when after I’ve gotten away from people and get alone with my computer I reflect and write about the impact my relationships have on my life.

Monday morning my day started with time with God (a great relationship for me by the way); this time helps me get ready for the day. I have my Monday morning meeting with my good friend and webmaster Rick Brock at 9 am. This meeting lasts about an hour and we discuss BanginBeatsByREL.com, developing a new website to host my complete body of work and two other websites which will support the larger vision I have for my business. I’ll share more about this with you in the coming months as it all take shape.

My relationship with Rick began in 1994. We met at a local Dept. of Motor Vehicles office and our connection was a video gaming magazine he was reading. While today we run a business venture together, our relationship started through a mutual passion: video gaming.

My next meeting was at noon with “Deuce”, currently the director of a program called Impact with a YWCA in the Twin Cities area. We spoke about the implementation of a music production / creative writing / empowerment program for youth that I am to develop for them. I first met Deuce in 1992 through my first business partner.

Near the end of the meeting, after discussing program particulars, I asked a question I have never asked anyone before; “Would he mentor me through the process of creating a world class program fusing music and youth empowerment?” He said yes. Nice!!!

After my meeting with Deuce, I stopped by my boy Kev Duke’s office to pick his brain a bit and share some of my previous meeting details with him. Kev and I go back to around 1996. We met while I was working with Minneapolis Public Schools doing conflict resolution and social skills training. Along with Rick, Kev is one of my most intimate and close friends; however, my visit with him was mostly about letting him know that I wanted to set a time to meet with him and tap into the 20+ years of youth work experience he possesses.

Later in the evening, I spoke with my friend and personal assistant Tina Gatewood as she began pulling files for three clients who will be signing production contracts this week as well as tending to other things on her task list. Tina has been with me just over a year. We met at a church I used to attend. I was a part of the music ministry and the music ministry director was interested in meeting a woman sitting with Tina so I made an introduction and went on to offer that we go to my place and I would cook dinner for the four of us.

During the course of the evening, I was moved by Tina’s peaceful style. Today I’m impressed with her patience and truly grateful for the work she does and the genuine friendship she provides. In some respects, I’m still learning how to have a personal assistant because while I’m clear I can’t do everything myself, old habits of attempting to do so die hard.

I spoke with and interacted with more people than the four I have mentioned today, however, each of them speak clearly to the point. These people are investing in me and are contributing to my life in ways that differ greatly from what I expected. They believe in me and are willing to offer their best to help me create my best. These are my God-delivered people; the perfect ones that have arrived covertly disguised as folks who just seemed to be passing through.

The truth is they have been planted here for a time such as this! I am grateful they have said yes to me in the many ways that they have. I desire that I serve them in their time of need however that need may show up as gracefully and faithfully as they have.

It is 3:27 am on Tuesday as I type this and I can say I got what I prayed for nearly 18 hours ago; guidance, discernment and insight from God which came through them. I could say so much more, but I will save those words for a point yet to be made.

Where would I be without you? Hummmm . . .

Just my thoughts.

 What's New?
A lot’s going on and I feel great about some recent developments. A website we are developing which is essentially the whole catalog of SCR Entertainment is now in the works.

The first 12 SCR releases dating back to 1993 plus all of the new works will be available on this new website. At launch we will have over 150 tracks, with more coming! While the new site is being developed we will put some of the albums on BanginBeatsByREL.com as an example of what will be available.

We intend to launch the new website in time for the release of my first solo album, “Spoken”. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of this exciting new project.

Here is a breakdown of the 5 most recent beats added to the site:
  • Mo Fo U - Other Flavor
  • Jazzy Funk - East Coast
  • In The Hole - Club Flavor
  • West Coast Funk - West Coast
  • Symphony Funk - West Coast
 Other Stuff

Natasha from Canada will be flying into the Twin Cities for ten days near the end of August to work with me on her first spoken word album. I am very excited and am looking forward to keeping you updated on the progress of this project.

I’m nearly done with a test collaboration which I will make available very soon. What does that mean? I will tell you about it in next week’s newsletter and make it available to you for download.

 Wisdom From The Grind

It's Time To Build The Team - Part 1

Absolutely nothing happens in the music business, or any business for that matter, without another person affecting the outcome in some way. Over the course of your musical career, no matter how long it lasts, your achievements will all be linked to your relationships! Throughout history, not one individual has accomplished any great thing without the assistance of at least one other person.

I am now going to offer an approach to developing the team that will help you win. Within this context I define winning as achieving clearly established goals and positioning yourself for opportunities that dreams are made of. I will be presenting this information in three parts.

Part 1: Know Your Strengths / Skills
Many of the things we do as artists, producers, songwriters, etc. are done alone; just us and the art.

Writing, rehearsing, refining and motivating ourselves are all part of what we must do to prepare for presentation to others. However, let me state redundantly what you already know, or at least should know: being ready and having phenomenal skill won’t necessarily get you noticed. Countless others throughout history have gone unnoticed, not because they lacked skill or talent, but because they didn’t have the right connect, or in other words, relationships!

Every person who has reached the highest point in their field had a team supporting them. Choose any giant in any game: Jordan playing ball, Tiger golfing, Jay Z rockin mics, or T Pain producing tracks. They all had a team supporting them.

Let’s look at this another way. Consider again, any player in any game that caused you to ask: how did they get there? He can’t hoop, she can’t sing, or whatever. They all got there for the same reason: their team!

Look Closer
Have you ever really noticed the credits at the end of a movie? I don’t mean can you recall that you have seen them, I mean have you ever read the names and titles in the credits and noticed how many individuals and companies are involved in making your two hour piece of entertainment? Within the packaging of many products like video games and computer software, magazines, etc., you will see many names associated with bringing that product to market.

Each person is necessary, and, in an ideal situation, all serve to efficiently and effectively synergize for the purpose of delivering a product consumers want. Remove any individual from the equation and one of two things, or both, happen: overall quality decreases; multitasking takes place.

Most, if not all, of us are multitasking in some areas whether we like it or not and this is true about our situation whether we like it or not: quality suffers. Quality is not just about the product itself, it’s also about having adequate development time as well as meeting delivery to market deadlines without repeatedly adjusting release dates.

Case in point; recently I was reading an article in Sound On Sound magazine (June 2009) where Raphael Saadiq (Google him if you don’t know who he is) was talking about the old Motown days when you had a room full of song writers, musicians, singers, a producer and an engineer all working to bring great music to music lovers. The Team!

His point was if he had that type of team working with him today he could release new songs every week. Given that he garnered five Grammy nominations for his first solo album, where he largely did all the production and writing himself, demonstrates that product and presentation quality didn’t suffer but he still desires a situation in which he can produce and release great music similar to the frequency established by the Motown team. The frequency of music release for him is yearly, not weekly or even monthly.

Opinions vary on this point, however, I accept this as my truth: whatever you’re particular set of skills, focus on your area of strength and seek the team to bring their strength to your areas of weakness. Notice that I said areas in the plural; we all have a set of skills that are strong as well as areas of weakness.

You will need to understand what your strengths are because at the beginning of your career, and even along the way, you will have to sell the value of your skill set to the support (teammates) you seek. Also, if you’re not clear on your strengths, which will also expose some areas of weakness as well as areas of need, you won’t be able to effectively focus your energies on the next step: determining who you need.

Excersice:
Determine your top three or four strengths / skills. This is about knowing what makes you relevant. These are the things you do and will be known for. Don’t just think about it, write them down.

Know your strengths / skills, this will prepare you for part two: determining who you need.

 Featured Project

Beat production for BanginBeatsByREL.com continues to be the priority until the first goal is met: 60 World Class Beats! We now have 27 on the site.

"Spoken", my first solo album is developing nicely! This album will be a mix of all the musical flavors I love; spoken word, rap, neo-soul and lounge / down tempo tracks.

I'm an artist doing what artists do; creating art. Of course it's hip hop, and my hip hop roots will be felt. I've already begun production, so as things are developed I will share them with you. I have added three more tracks to the project. The total track number has again changed. At this point I’m considering 15. This will mark album number 13.
