 Just My Thoughts

Roger E LearI love to read; I read every day. In The Garden (my production studio) I have two bookcases holding some 100 books as well as music industry related magazines, equipment manuals and some other odds and ends. Words inspire me, and over the years I’ve even come to appreciate the writing style of a few authors; so much so that I have purchased works from the same authors off name recognition alone.

I might not read a book right away but as sometimes happens, I notice it months later in my bookcase and begin reading it and, almost as if somehow I was prompted to start reading, I am spoken to through the words of the book. The words are relevant to my life at that time and something becomes clear to me, or an answer I needed was provided, or a new thought was stimulated which perfectly fit the work I was doing at the time.

I used to consider this coincidence; however, the frequency with which this has happened over the years has provided me with a comfortable feeling that information comes to me when I’m ready and able to receive it. I’ve seen the same information repeatedly in the past, but now a light comes on and I understand. I’m still working on being patient enough to let things unfold without my trying to control the speed of its arrival, but with this too I’m getting better.

I often go to places like Barnes & Noble, first searching the bargain bins looking for deals, and then looking at the new works that recently arrived. From time to time one book will stand out to me, seemingly unrelated to anything I’m looking for. I’ve become more perceptive about this lately. I used to try to make this make sense; I would pick up the book, flip through it, put it down, uninterested and do the same thing a couple of times over the course of two or three weeks until I finally buy it simply because I keep picking it up.

Some books have been in my bookcase for nearly a year before I’ve touched them; some are still untouched. I remember reading this somewhere; “When the student is ready, the teacher arrives.” Hummm . . . I have many examples in my life that cause me to believe this is true.

While reading a newly purchased book, familiar information registered in a stunningly new way and a bright light came on for me; something so deeply profound, yet so incredibly simple, that it has affected nearly every moment of my life since.

To attempt to explain the knowing would be to try to explain many events in my life, my historic references and the previous lights that have come on and why I interpret them the way that I do. So, I will just say that I see something God has been showing me for a while! Really?!?! Basically, what happened is embodied in the following story.

A boy was beating a stone with a sledge hammer. Over the course of several weeks he worked to split the stone in two, repeatedly hitting it as hard as he could and becoming discouraged with his seeming lack of progress. 999 times he hit the stone with all he had. Pausing to gather himself, he attempted to muster the willingness to keep pushing. In his mind he began to believe he would never break the stone in two. With half-hearted resolve, he lifts the hammer to begin again and, with strike 1,000 the rock breaks in two. The 1,000th strike wasn’t the difference, it was the 999 before it!

Some will deeply get the meaning of this story; others will wonder why I seem to be all over the place. Still others will get it later when the time is perfect for them. Whatever happens, so be it. In my newly illuminated space I pose a question: have you ever heard either of these sayings? “You can control your thinking,” or “As a man thinketh so is he.” Hummmm . . . Bright is the light of understanding, and with it comes peace.

Just my thoughts.

Be Mindful Of Your Sources Of Information

I have, and I’m sure you have as well, heard the saying “Knowledge is power.” Well, I don’t agree. To me, knowledge is not power but rather applied knowledge is power. Excellent information without application is useless. The power comes from utilizing the knowledge effectively, not from simply having it.

Adding to this is the importance of having appropriate knowledge; knowing what a producer does doesn’t make you a producer. You may think that is over simplified, however, I’ve seen that type of reasoning cause people to waste years doing something they were not cut out to do.

It’s very important to carefully scrutinize from where and from whom your information comes. So, for the sake of the point, let’s assume that we all have a desire to apply effectively the sound information we receive for the purpose of becoming successful in our chose field of expertise; namely, the music business. This brings us to the sources of information we use as our operational knowledge.

I don’t care much for the news. Local, national and international news all derive the bulk of their information shared from negativity. Every hour we can hear about death, destruction, chaos, disaster, business failure and impending doom on the way, all in the first five minutes of any hour.

Negative information flow is abundant in books, newspapers, monthly magazines and the internet as well. If you listen too long, it becomes very easy to carry that negativity into every interaction you are involved in. Too much negativity can undermine effort, stifle belief, diminish focus and assault purpose.

On the other end of the spectrum are those who simply believe that positive thinking and affirmation will reap them the results they are seeking. Hummm . . . OK. Neither extreme provides a sound foundation for determining the necessary steps to take to make your goals and dreams happen.

On one side of the extreme the constant negativity makes it nearly impossible to see opportunity, let alone be willing to attempt to succeed against such daunting odds. On the other side, positive thinking and affirmation will give you a sunny disposition but won’t clarify the process or steps required to take advantage of opportunities that even an undirected life will provide.

Here is a simple way to help get some answers you need. First, identify what you want to know; how to write songs, how to start a record label, what a manager does, whatever. Second, hit a major book store and extensively check out magazine racks in your areas of interest. No, not books; magazines. A monthly periodical will be much more up to date than a book. Third, spend time developing clear ideas about what you want to do and what information you will need to assist you. In this respect, knowledge is power.

I subscribe to seven monthly magazines and have for many years. Over time these have provided me with great information for the areas of my life in which I seek professional counsel or insight. I’m not suggesting that these are the best or even necessary for you, however, for me they provide a balance of information relating to areas in my life that are collectively relevant to helping me be informed. They help me make some very sound decisions.

Success Magazine Success
This is a magazine all about positive mental reinforcement. Topics cover business, leadership and articles on success.
Keyboard Magazine EQ Magazine Keyboard and EQ
Both of these music magazines cover new industry trends and new studio products from keyboards, Softsynths, studio equipment, as well as composition and production techniques. There is also an occasional article of interest.
Mix Magazin Mix
This is the music magazine where I receive pro level information on new high end studio gear and the state of the industry as a whole from record labels to major band tours to the business of making money as a studio / label owner.
Black Enterprise Magazine Inc. Magazine Black Enterprise and INC
Both of these magazines share information usable to the budding entrepreneur and the small to mid-sized business owner. They provide information on trends, business tips, insight and useful resources to help business professionals grow their enterprises.
Men's Health Magazine Men’s Health
Without my health nothing else will matter. This magazine provides topics on eating, nutrition and exercise along with articles on how to create the best you possible.

Over the years these magazines have proven to be consistent sources of balanced information. While these are not the only sources I pull information from, they have over time proven to be like reliable companions on my success journey. I have always wanted to be able to evaluate my chances of success realistically, knowledge will help with this.

Someone simply telling me that I can never fail won’t help me succeed if there is a process I must follow that I’m unaware of. On the other hand, a pessimist will fail not because he is pessimistic but because his pessimism won’t allow him to hear or accept any other information contrary to what he believes.

Businesses are thriving and businesses are failing. Both are true statements. Physical CD sales are plummeting, but in the June 2009 edition of Mix magazine I saw this: “Lil Wayne sold 9.1 million units of Lollipop.” This was the top-selling digitally downloaded single of 2008. These were paid for! People are still buying!

I have heard that the old music industry business model is dead. Really?!?! However, in August 2009 you will see new music videos on MTV, BET, VH1, etc. You will hear new artist songs on the radio and new artists will get signed to record deals.

Next year the Grammy awards will be televised and someone will be winning new artist of the year. Will it be you? The business is changing, but understand this: money has been made, money is being made and money will be made. Learn how to get the money that is in circulation by being mindful of the information you accept as the definitive facts for your life.

Some folks want to sell you a dream (all easy with little or no work). Don’t listen! Some want to inundate you with doom and gloom; “you can’t make it, you can’t even get a record deal anymore.” Don’t listen to them either!

Great sources of information should expose you to resources and opportunities while pointing out key points of awareness and potential pitfalls. Nothing and no one will likely hand you success, but you can get there from here.

 Featured Project
Beat production for BanginBeatsByREL.com continues to be the priority until the first goal is met: 60 World Class Beats! We now have 27 on the site.

"Spoken", my first solo album is developing nicely! This album will be a mix of all the musical flavors I love; spoken word, rap, neo-soul and lounge / down tempo tracks.

I'm an artist doing what artists do; creating art. Of course its hip hop, and my hip hop roots will be felt. I've already begun production, so as things develop I will share them with you. I have added three more tracks to the project. The total track number has again changed. At this point I’m considering 15. This will mark album number 13.
 Quote Of The Week
"You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird . . . So let's look at the bird and see what it's doing -- that's what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something."
