 Just My Thoughts

Roger E LearThis writing process is becoming more and more interesting to me. Mostly because I am challenged by my perceptions about what should be written. I get to experience my resistance to self-exposure.

I do enjoy sharing my passion and experience but I realize that I also inevitably expose parts of myself that don’t allow me to control the perceptions other form about me. I now realize that in my daily life my writing says more about me than my music does.

I have certain topics I love talking about in song as well as when I write rhymes or spoken word. In song, I love writing about great sex or romance and relationships. Not in an overtly sexual way, but in a more poetic or abstract way.

When it comes to rhyme and spoken word I love to write either to stimulate thought or to shed light on what seems empty or uninspiring to me. That covers my general song and rhyme writing / spoken word style.

However, when I’m writing in my journal which is raw and uncut I feel free to express myself knowing it’s for my eyes only. I’ve been journaling daily since 2005 and I’ve gained great insight into my own habits and tendencies that in my daily life I occasionally overlook.

It has been very rewarding and sometimes distressing to look back on my life one year ago on any day I choose and see; when I woke up, how I felt, what I was doing, what was the challenge at that time and where was I in my success process. Now that I, at the suggestion of my BanginBeatsByREL.com venture partner, have committed to a weekly newsletter, I can say I am being stretched.

Let me be clear about this; writing is writing to me and I believe it all flows from the same creative place. But, somehow this “Just My Thoughts” writing feels more intimate. I once heard someone say; intimacy broken down is “into me you see”.

The challenge to me is not to fear this level of exposure; I have been on stage many times in front of large numbers of people, yet when I begin the newsletter writing process I liken my nervousness to that which I felt when I hit the stage my first 15 or 20 times. This is the life of an artist in a new area of artistry. My artistry will expose me, showing you who I am and if I observe, showing me myself as well.

I’ve often said that I don’t believe in “writer’s block”. A writer I know drafts somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 pages a day. He also says writer’s block doesn’t exist. He says, “If you can’t write what you want at the time, write something else and the desired topic will arrive when it’s supposed to.”

What I have written so far is a perfect example of his point; I didn’t know what to write about when I started, but I began with the sentence “This writing process is becoming more and more interesting to me.” This has brought me back to my original point; I hate uncontrolled exposure. Oops, too late!

I intend to write this newsletter for a long time, so get ready for the transparency I can’t avoid. I am a less-than-perfect perfectionist persisting to attempt perfection while recognizing the best I can do is what I do. This is my best today, which is, well, perfect. Meaning, I am the only me I can be at this time – perfect! I share my authentic self with you; good, bad and indifferent.

Just my thoughts!

 What's New?
Negotiations have begun with Natasha from Canada for custom album production. Will she be the first to record an album with me through BanginBeatsByREL.com? Will she be the first featured artist on the site? Stay tuned.

I also want to mention for the first time an artist I’m working with by the name of Leonard Jones. I am working on his album in The Garden and I will be providing you with the progress on his joint as well.

Have you checked out the REL's Remixes page?

Here is a breakdown of the 5 most recent beats added to the site:
  • Mo Fo U - Other Flavor
  • Jazzy Funk - East Coast
  • In The Hole - Club Flavor
  • West Coast Funk - West Coast
  • Symphony Funk - West Coast
 Other Stuff
As I mentioned last week, we are about to implement a pricing change; the new price for beats will be $19.95. The quality will remain the same, but this price point adjustment seems win / win to me. Subscribers will still receive their 10% discount. The new $19.95 pricing will go into effect Friday, June 26th.

The new email and newsletter delivery system at BanginBeatsByREL.com is now in place. We are refining and improving the way we serve you while navigating the unknowns of online beat sales and the new music business.

Researching continues to determine how best to provide excellent service and keep on top of the latest trends to ensure we grow and stay relevant.

Halla!
 Wisdom From The Grind
With Prioritization And Focus You Will Get More Accomplished

The music business, as with most businesses, is changing rapidly. How does one keep up with all of the changes? How do you take in, analyze and apply all of the latest and greatest ways of doing business, make money and remain true to your art?

This week I’m going to touch on two things which are extremely important and very basic: prioritization and focus. To prioritize means to arrange or schedule in order of importance, and, focus means to bring into focus or to concentrate.

First, it’s important to understand that I’m not implying a right or wrong way of doing a thing; I will leave that type of judgment up to you. However, there are efficient and inefficient ways of accomplishing things. The more efficient your process, the more you can accomplish and, conceivably, the greater the results.

Let’s start with the first question I posed above; how does one keep up with all of the changes in the music business? The answer is; you don’t! You keep up with the areas which affect what you do most.

The music business is multi-faceted, and, while it behooves an artist to be informed regarding his or her affairs, your value lies in doing what you do best and paying or allying with others to do the equally important jobs that are outside of your expertise.

I’ve touched on this before in the article entitled “The Team Who Will Help You Win” but this bears repeating. Many of the things we do as artists, producers, songwriters, etc., are done alone; just us and the art.

Writing, rehearsing, refining and motivating ourselves are all part of what we must do to prepare for presentation to others. However, let me state redundantly what you already know, or at least should know, being ready and having phenomenal skill won’t necessarily get you noticed.

Countless numbers throughout history have gone unnoticed, not because they lacked skill, but because they didn’t have the right connections. Every person who has reached the highest point in their field had a team supporting them. Choose any giant in the game; Jordan playing ball, Tiger golfing, Jay Z rockin mics or T Pain producing tracks. They all had a team supporting them.

Let’s look at this another way. Consider again any player in any game that caused you to ask; how did they get there? He can’t hoop, she can’t sing, or whatever. They got there for the same reason; their team!

I wrote every word of this email; however, with all that I have to do you would never have received it without the expertise of one of MY team members. As your career grows, there will be an ever increasing need for “The Team.”

Having said that, I move on to prioritization:

If you are a song writer, your most efficient area of operation is writing songs. Also, within your area of prioritization should be developing an understanding about performance rights companies like ASCAP and BMI. If you don’t know these acronyms or what a performance rights company is then now is the time to look them up.

It is in your best interest to know about copyrights, publishing income and a publisher’s role in getting your songs placed with artists and companies seeking new songs. Knowing about song placement services such as “Taxi” is also part of the basics for a songwriter in today’s music business. I will touch on priorities for producers and performing artists in future writings.

Lastly, I will touch on focus:

Focus on those activities you do exceptionally well and from which you produce excellent results. You must find ways to invest most of your time every week doing what you do best and allow the team to do what they do best.

You may ask; “what if I don’t have a team?” I will get into team building another time, but in the case of a song writer, ASCAP or BMI have a wealth of information to point you in the right direction. We all wear a lot of hats in a world that says multi-tasking is the only way to keep up or get ahead. However, at the end of any given day the fewer things I have to focus on, the more things I get done. The more things I have to focus on, the fewer things I get done. Go figure.

Wisdom from the grind: with prioritization and focus you will get more done!
 Featured Project
Beat production for BanginBeatsByREL.com continues to be the priority until the first goal is met: 60 World Class Beats! We now have 27 on the site.

I am making some good progress on my first solo album "Spoken". This album will be a mix of all the musical flavors I love; spoken word, rap, neo-soul and lounge / down tempo tracks.

I'm an artist doing what artists do; creating art. Of course its hip hop, and my hip hop roots will be felt. I've already begun production, so as things develop I will share them with you. I have added three more tracks to the project. The total track number has again changed. At this point I’m considering 15. This will mark album number 13.
 Quote Of The Week
The things we say “yes” to and “no” to can make all the difference.

"The man who has not learned to say “no” will be a weak if not wretched man as long as he lives."
