 Just My Thoughts
My alarm went off at 6 am this morning. As I was lying in bed, my always active mind went from first gear to fourth, meaning; the world is moving REL, you better get up or get left behind.

The voice on the radio (my morning alarm is talk radio) says it’s going to be 86 degrees today. It’s Tuesday, May 19th and this is going to be the hottest day of the year so far. Nice! I hit the gym at 6:30 (working on the personal sexiness!), do breakfast and other morning stuff and by 9 am I am writing this newsletter.

All morning I’ve been experiencing choices; get up or sleep in, go hard at the gym or just do the two miles, spend time at the pool today or work on my album. This is just a small sampling of what we all do regularly. So why am I thinking so much about choices today?

Primarily I’m thinking about choices because I recently reviewed my own truth. I write in my journal daily, as I have regularly since 2005, and last week I reviewed May 2008 to see what is real about my life one year later. I saw some nice changes, cool improvements, and to my dismay, a number of things which remain unchanged, undeveloped, or untouched; all because of choices.

Insert your favorite cliché; I haven’t gotten around to it yet, can’t find the time, at some point I will do this or that, someday I will . . ., etc. The truth is, if I go back to May 2007 I’m sure I would see more of the same. How much longer is this going to go on?

I’m not beating myself up; I’m just more interested in what’s really going on in my life today than I have ever been before. I’m seeking to answer this question; do the words and actions really line up or is it all just sounding good? My focus now is on action and results because I have always talked a good game; walking it out is what I strive to do more of.

Last week I wrote about Grammies, Oscars, book writing and a desire to achieve those goals. Let’s look at a Grammy for instance; I may have to write 50 songs (an oversimplification) before one of them get placed with the right artist at the right time to even get considered. If I’ve only written two songs, that means I’ve got 48 more to do.

Whatever my choices are today, I’m getting closer, or not, to what I’ve said I want. “Do something” is something I say often. Today my alarm went off at 6 am and it took me 5 minutes to choose to get up. I vacillated for over four minutes between “sleep in” and “get up” before I finally got up.

As a kid I was told “your destiny is yours for the choosing”. It has taken a lot of years to recognize that I’ve always had the ability to choose my direction in life. It is 100% my choice. (Side note: although I said it from time to time as a young man, “The Man” never held me down.)

Today I won’t make it to the pool, but I will be working on a song for my upcoming album. Today I’m choosing to move in on the things I want. Someday is now! Nahmean?

 Other Stuff

Another first: over 100 subscribers!

I don’t take this lightly. Getting subscribers is great but keeping you is what’s most important. I have much to share with you and I will continue to do so. However, as always if you have questions to ask, news to share or a point to make, feel free to let me know. Like I’ve said in the past, if you stimulate my thinking I will address your message here in the newsletter.

Big shout to Kolos from Greece; thank you for your trust and your business. I look forward to doing big things with you.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the men and women who have served or are serving in the United States armed forces. On this upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend I will take some time to reflect on and appreciate the freedoms I have today.

Some of the freedoms I acknowledge are the freedom to choose how I live, how I express myself, and how I dream. While Memorial Day in America focuses on the US armed forces which is special to me because I also served three years in the US Army, my appreciation also extends to all men and women throughout history whose sacrifices have contributed to the ever growing freedoms we all enjoy no matter what country we live in.

Be safe and enjoy your freedom!

Start the Process as Soon as Possible
Everything takes time, often more than we expect. In 1988 I bought my first four-track recorder and started learning to produce songs. Very basic stuff, but I didn’t wait for the perfect time to start producing music.

I got busy as soon as I could afford the recorder; I didn’t wait until I had the skill to produce a song or an album before I started working on tracks. I sold my first song in 1990 and produced my first album in 1993. Between the five years from 1988 to 1993, all of the work came down to learn, refine, practice, follow the leaders I admired and repeat the process. Do something!

Steven Spielberg has an unadjusted gross from all of the films he’s directed, to date, in excess of 8.5 billion dollars worldwide. Spike Lee has produced and / or directed 35 films since 1983; LL Cool J has recorded 12 albums and won two Grammies since 1985; Dr. Cornel West has written more than 20 books.

Many, many more achievements can be mentioned but the point here is that they all started with the first one. Where are you in the process? Are you writing your first song? Working on your first album? Deciding which track on BanginBeatsByREL.com should be your first purchase? Not sure how to proceed?

The first thing to do is this: do something! Plan and move; as you move you will discover adjustments you will need to make. Do something, adjust and keep moving. Often, after starting you will encounter things that never would have been seen before starting. Do something!

You can’t do the second thing without doing the first thing! Personal note: I used to hate when people would point out the obvious as if I didn’t get it. However, if I “get it” but still don’t do what clearly is beneficial to do, then the question remains; do I really get it? Do something!

Another Jay Z quote I love fits here; “I got now, I don’t care who got next.” Someday is now! Sometimes we fear making certain choices, but not choosing is still a choice and one which leads to a longer process. I’m not suggesting moving forward blindly, only the importance of avoiding unnecessary delay.

Your career and life are waiting on the next move. Do something!

Wisdom from the grind: Start the process as soon as possible!
 Featured Project
Beat production for BanginBeatsByREL.com continues to be the priority until the first goal is met: 60 World Class Beats! We now have 22 on the site.

I am working on my first solo album “Spoken”. This album will be a mix of all the musical flavors I love; spoken word, rap, neo-soul and lounge / down tempo tracks.

I’m an artist doing what artists do; creating art. Of course it’s hip hop, and my hip hop roots will be felt. I’ve already begun production, so as things are developed I will share them with you. At this point I have selected 10 tracks for sure. This will mark album number 13.
 Quote Of The Week
This is a very fitting quote considering what I’ve touched on this week. Regardless of the endeavor, it is so true.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
