 Just My Thoughts
Dream bigger! REL, dream bigger!

What I’m about to share with you is not just about material things; material things are just part of the equation. Let me start this way; REL, dream bigger! Now; [insert your name] _____________, dream bigger!

Almost two years ago I moved into a luxury apartment from the (finished) basement of my momma’s house. While looking at one of the empty rooms of this (considerable) living conditions improvement I envisioned, in finished fashion, The Garden (my music production studio).

To the naked eye there was one window, four walls and beige carpet; but, I could see The Garden where every track on the website has been created. I envisioned it in its final form even when the room was empty.

I saw all of the equipment, most of it still un-purchased, and where it would ultimately be. I saw the lighting, the book shelves and even the painting I created for the wall behind my mix position. This all came through vision before actuality; thought before manifestation.

Today I drive a Mercedes E320, I have a two month old beat website that my good friend and webmaster Rick Brock and I first conceptualized over two years ago. BanginBeatsByREL.com is here now along with something born after the fact; a newsletter with 89 (so far) subscribers.

I took a six year break from music after producing 12 albums and hundreds of demos. I thought I was done with music. Why? Because, while I’ve never been a millionaire, I’ve traveled to other countries and tasted the fruits of success, performed on stages and got what I thought I wanted (money and stuff) yet found myself unsatisfied.

The Word says “Without vision the people perish”. No vision, no dream, equals stagnation! (I added that last part, thehehehehehe). While I could have gotten more things and gone more places, I now recognize my desires were immature and my vision was limited.

I didn’t know how to see beyond myself. My question to myself: what will I give for all I get? How can I serve? Hummmmmmm. Dream bigger!

I’m basically continuing my career now after the six year pause with a clearer vision, and the results I’m getting are a byproduct of dreaming the dream and walking it out bigger. I never realized how easy it was to acquire things until I lost them and made a decision to get them back and then did the work.

What is the work? Dream bigger, tap into the passion; the “why” of it all. That for me means rapping, producing tracks and writing, whether it be songs, poetry, or my first book (writing it!) And, it is doing those things that I clearly see that I am to do like when I saw The Garden in the empty room.

These things give pleasure to me and others. I’ve seen in my own life what I can accomplish when I continue to dream bigger. These are things I’ve never done: won a

Grammy or an Oscar; written a best-selling book; spoken life inspiring words to a room filled with 10,000 listeners; saved a life with a touch of my hand and my presence; said “I do” to a woman; or looked back on my life and said I believe I have given my all.

I will do all of these things! And lives will be made better because I did! Now, dream bigger!

 Wisdom From The Grind
Study the Great Writers and the Craft of Writing
In 1996 I was doing a hip hop compilation CD called The Collective for SCR Entertainment. There were 11 MCs and because I value the craft of lyric writing, during the album pre-production stage I decided that we, as a collective, would get together and critique the lyrical content of each song submitted for album consideration. I wanted to ensure quality in content.

Now, two of the MCs had crazy flow but their lyrics fell short of the established standard so after repeated failed attempts to improve their writing I put a spotlight on the primary issue; limited vocabulary. I asked them each a single question which I ask of you as well: as quickly as you can without taking time to think, how many rhymes can you come up with for the word “you”? Try it. Don’t read further until you try this.

How many did you come up with? Neither of the MCs could do more than ten. Now pick up a rhyming dictionary and you will find more than 100 words that rhyme with “you”. Many of these words would inspire whole new ideas, and many of those ideas could be the difference between a great song and just another mediocre one.

Many of the greatest songs were crafted, not just written. Crafting great ideas takes time and effort in thought. As a writer, your greatest asset is a command of words. Your tools as a writer should include a rhyming dictionary, a thesaurus, and works of other writers you admire.

Reading a variety of written works will also inspire ideas. One of the first rhyme writers I loved back in the day was Rakim (very old school). For R&B it was the writing teams of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and LA & Babyface who were consistently crafting hit after hit through the 1980’s and ‘90’s. Even if you don’t want to be a great lyric writer, (really!?!?) your writing will improve when you write often and study great writers and the craft of writing.
